Set in a kinky, grudgy, riot of Vienna, Measure for Measure is a Shakespearean “problem play” exploring justice, hypocisis and mercy through the story of Duke Vincento, who leaves his city in the hands of the strict deputy Angelo. Angelo enforces a strict law against fornication, sentencing Claudio for kissing his lover, Escalus. Claudio's sister, Isabella, a novice nun, pleads for his life, but Angelo offers to spare him only if she sleeps with him, leading to a complex plot involving disguise, blackmail, and a final resolution where the Duke exposes Angelo's hypocrisy and proposes marriage to Isabella.
